I started my fitness career in 1988, working at a “big box gym”; cleaning equipment, spotting gym clientele and personal training. After spending some time managing a local gym, I went on to pursue my career in personal training. I opened Custom Fitness in 1995; a Burlington Personal Training Studio. As a Custom Fitness client, you choose where your workout will be, to fit your busy day. Training is offered at our private personal training studio, outside, or in the comfort of your own home.
My education and certifications grow, according to my clients needs. They include Personal Trainer Specialist (canfitpro), Nutrition and Wellness Specialist (canfitpro), Golf Fitness Instructor (Titleist Performance Institute), TRX, Swiss Ball (CHEK institute), and group cycling (Cycling Reebok) … just to name a few. To stay current, I regularly attend seminars and trade shows to learn as much as I can about fitness. My continuing education gives me the ability to know what works and what doesn’t.
Fitness trends come and go, but knowing the basics will help in the long run. This is why I am still training today. I stay away from quick money making schemes and stay true to my training and knowledge. When training my clients, I concentrate on movements not muscles. What I mean by this is, we do pushing, pulling, level change type exercises to challenge you. Your body doesn’t know what a dumbbell biceps curl is (arm curl). It does however know what it needs to do to raise your hand up to feed yourself. Basically the same movement pattern.
By using movements to get your results. Small single muscles exercises are left out unless certain goals are requiring it. If you need to strengthen your arms to complete a task for work or just to be able to put something in a bin overhead. Combination type exercises can be done. All and all your going to be working your body the way it was meant to be used. Not sitting in some machine moving the bars in a single plane of motion.
We live in a 3D environment, so we train in one too!
As you can tell from the pictures, we don’t use machines. Only your body doing the stabilizing.
